What Hawaiian Island Should We Go To? (surfing, quiet, amenities)?

Going sometime within the next year or so and need to know which island. Not worried about going to large cities or popular tourist destinations, island hopper flights are fairly cheap and we'd rather go somewhere quiet and visit the popular places. What we need is a resort (or place to rent a house) that is on some lone beach that is *safe* for younger children to swim. Surf spot is a MUST for myself but i am okay if we have to walk 20 minutes or so to the next bay over. Would like some amenities so if it was near a old hawaiian town that we could walk to it would be great. Even if it was a fairly large city as long as where we are it is quiet. Big resort is ok as-well as long as it has that laid back hawaiian feel to it.

For the best balance of quiet and amenities, you're looking at Maui or Kauai. Big Island is too young to have many good coral reefs, so the few surfing beaches are quite crowded when the swells come in. Oahu is just too crowded, on all sides. Lanai and Molokai are too small. Lanai has one gas station, Molokai basically has two.

As far as what side of the island, that's a little tricky. In the winter, monster waves roll into north facing shores, while south facing shores are like glass, great for swimming and snorkeling. In the summer, folks hope for 3-6 foot swells on south facing shores (though some summers are just "junk" for waves), while the north shore is like glass.
