Why do I need a passport to RETURN from Hawaii?

I am going to Hawaii next may and I was told that although i do not need a passport to go to hawaii( just state ID) i need a passport to return to the states. WHy is this? I have heard this from many people and it just doesnt make any sence.

You don't need a passport if you're a U.S. citizen flying between states. If you leave the United States, you need to show your passport when you return. When you realize that Hawai`i is a state so you're not returning to "the states," you'll get the right answer.
