Blowfish Pufferfish

Pufferfish
The combination of these two defence mechanisms means that the Porcupine puffer is very well protected against predators. Any animal that attempts to make a meal of a pufferfish will almost certainly not repeat the mistake! PufferFish belong to the family Tetradontidae, which means they have four teeth. They are also called blowfish. There are species of PufferFish which live in freshwater, some species live best in brackish water, and some Puffers live best in marine or sea water. Once the puffer fishes body is swelled, most predators have a difficult time gripping the body or biting into it. In fact, the tough outer body of this fish has been known to remain undamaged after being stood on by a grown man. In most cases the puffer fish uses water to expand its body since water is the easier of the two elements to eject. They are called PufferFish because their ability to inflate themselves with water or air when they feel threatened. It is a defensive mechanism. It's harder to swallow a large fish than a small one. It can reach a size of 90 cm, which is extremely large for a puffer. The pufferfish is truly unique. Just by looking at a pufferfish, you can tell that it is no ordinary fish. Some have likened the puffer fish to underwater hamsters or even panda bears. Regardless of what you see when you look at pufferfish, you can't help but notice their expressive faces that sometimes even appear to be smiling.
Little is known about the spawning habits of this species.Like most pufferfish, this species is poisonous to eat. Their internal organs contain a powerful poison called tetrodotoxin. This poison prevents nerves of any creature that eats the fish from transmitting signals. This then causes paralysis and breathing difficulties. Death can result after only 30 minutes. Amazingly, researchers are currently working on a powerful painkiller based on tetrodotoxin. There are more than 120 species of pufferfish worldwide. Most are found in tropical and subtropical ocean waters, but some species live in brackish and even fresh water. A pufferfish scares away its enemies by gulping down water and inflating itself to appear much larger. The porcupine fish, a close relative of the pufferfish, has many prickly spines sticking out of its body. This can scare its enemies away. If it is caught by another fish, it can still enlarge itself in the fish's mouth, where both fish will die. They have long, tapered bodies with bulbous heads. Some wear wild markings and colors to advertise their toxicity, while others have more muted or cryptic coloring to blend in with their environment.
Puffer fish may contain the potent and deadly toxins tetrodotoxin and/or saxitoxin which can cause severe illness and death. These are central nervous system toxins and are 1,200 times more deadly than cyanide. Symptoms start within 20 minutes to 2 hours after eating the toxic fish. Initial symptoms include tingling of the lips and mouth, followed by dizziness, tingling in the extremities, problems with speaking, balance, muscle weakness and paralysis, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe intoxications, death can result from respiratory paralysis.
The Pufferfish can inflate it self since it has a remarkably flexible and elastic stomach that can be filled with water. If the Pufferfish becomes scared when it is out of water, it will instead suck in air. A puffed up Pufferfish will be nearly spherical. Regardless of whether your Pufferfish is in or out of water, you should always strive not to frighten your fish. Every time a Pufferfish inflate it self, it risks dying since air can become trapped inside its body and prevent it from deflating.
